Yuriy Burlachko, representative of the Land Agricultural Committee, and Lyudmila Bespalova, head of the Wheat and Triticale Breeding and Seed Production Department of the center, took part in the inspection of breeding achievements.
Venyamin Kondratyev noted that Kuban is proud of its successful wheat varieties created by the center's breeders, calling them the "Kuban gold."
“Year after year, high-quality, high-yielding wheat varieties are developed in Kuban. This is primarily the merit of agricultural science and, in particular, Lyudmila Bespalova, who this year was awarded the highest state award - the title Hero of Labor of the Russian Federation. You grow popular varieties that are in demand in agriculture not only within the region, but also beyond its borders, making a significant contribution to ensuring food security for the entire country,” said Venyamin Kondratyev.
Lyudmila Bespalova shared information about the latest scientific achievements and the first harvest of early wheat varieties, which took place in early June.
“We have a wide selection of varieties for each climatic zone. They are resistant to lodging and diseases, and are distinguished by their high yield. Thanks to genetic diversity, we can achieve excellent yields under any weather conditions. Our varieties, adapted to different regions, are actively used throughout the country, as well as in the countries of the former Soviet Union and in Turkey,” said Lyudmila Bespalova.
Venyamin Kondratyev presented data according to which Kuban grain accounts for 12 percent of the Russian grain market, thanks to a wide range of seeds of high-yielding wheat varieties. He also noted that in the current season, it is expected to harvest no less than 14 million tons of grain and legumes, including not less than 10 million tons of quality wheat.
This year, about 100 new varieties of wheat, barley, triticale, rye, and peas developed by the Scientific Research Institute of its own breeding were sown in demonstration fields. More than 1200 farmers from the Krasnodar Territory, Southern and North Caucasus Federal Districts, as well as from foreign countries, have already familiarized themselves with promising varieties to purchase them for planting in August.
Every year, the fields of the Krasnodar Territory are sown with winter wheat and barley varieties developed by local breeders. These seeds occupy 50% of the total sown area in Russia.
