Currently, six million people are employed in the agricultural sector in Russia, and there is a need for additional workers; however, equally important is the task of increasing productivity. Minister of Agriculture Oksana Lut stated in an interview with the TV channel "Russia-24" that the main goal of the Public Chamber on personnel issues is to preserve the existing number of workers in the agro-industrial complex (AIC) and increase labor efficiency.
"Currently, there is competition for personnel. All industries are aware of this. Yes, everyone needs workers. We are in great need of people, but we must also make efforts to increase labor productivity. Our task is to maintain our workforce while significantly increasing production volumes in line with presidential decree 309, which presupposes a 25% growth and a 1.5-fold increase in exports. So, the question here is more about preserving our working population amid a substantial increase in productivity," Oksana Lut said.
Theoretically, any process in any industry can be automated. However, in agriculture, there are areas that can only be done manually. According to the minister, technological automation is impossible there. "Perhaps progress can be made in this area as well, but at the moment, such technologies do not exist," she noted.
She pointed out the growing interest of young people in this industry: for example, in 2024, the number of applications for training in higher and secondary educational and professional institutions of the Ministry of Agriculture increased by 10% compared to 2023.
"Last year, 79 thousand people were admitted to our universities for higher and secondary vocational education. The number of targeted admissions has significantly increased. By the end of 2024, we were able to provide 19% of the total number of admission places through targeted admissions. By 2030, we aim to have 70% of admissions through targeted admissions, as it is important for our business and for us to understand that there are young people who will work in this industry," the minister said.
She also mentioned the agroclass project, which represents a separate agrotechnological profile in the general educational standard. "We have already opened 50 experimental agroclasses in several regions of Russia. By the end of the year, we expect that, together with the business sector, we will be able to open around 600 agrotechnical classes, and by 2030, their number will increase to 18 thousand nationwide," Oksana Lut announced.
