It is projected that EU countries will increase soybean meal production in the new agricultural season 2024/25. The soybean harvest is expected to reach a record level, which will contribute to the increase in production. However, the European Union will remain a net importer of soybean meal.
In her speech at the VegOil&Meals Trade conference, chief commodity analyst at "ASAP Agri" Katerina Mudriyan noted that the EU is the largest consumer of meal from oilseeds. It imports about 50 million tons of meal annually, while its own production covers only 63% of the demand.
Most of the import is soybean meal, around 80% of the total volume. Soybean meal also accounts for 60% of the total meal consumption in the EU.
According to Mudriyan, rapeseed meal holds about 30% of the market share, but its import is the lowest as the EU produces almost all the necessary rapeseed products thanks to its own rapeseed yield.
Sunflower meal has the smallest share in total consumption – about 10%, with imports accounting for approximately 13%.
The expert noted that in the previous season 2023/24, soybean meal imports to the EU were the lowest in the past five years. The import volume was 1 million tons less than the previous season.
The European Union mainly acquires soybean meal from Brazil, which accounts for 63% of the imports in the season 2023/24, which is 12% more than the previous year. Ukraine also increased its share in soybean meal supplies to the EU from 2% to 3% in the current season," Mudriyan reported.
