The Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation plans to develop projects related to the selection and cultivation of sugar beet seeds in order to reduce dependence on imported seeds, as reported by the official website of the department. Currently, domestic seeds occupy only a small share of the market, and, according to respected academician Viktor Dragavtsev, expenses on purchasing seeds from countries with hostile policies amount to over 16 billion rubles (approximately 163 million dollars) annually. The main supplier is a German-American company specializing in hybrid seeds production for the Russian market, as noted by the information portal SP.
Currently, Russia lacks advanced breeding work on sugar beet: after the collapse of the Soviet Union, all research remained in Ukrainian institutions. The Russian breeding station located near Voronezh does not conduct scientific research. Professionals emphasize that imported seeds are better adapted to climatic conditions, but under complex weather conditions, they do not provide the expected yield, highlighting the need for the development of domestic varieties.
Organizations such as "SoyuzSembeet" are involved in developing domestic hybrids: this year, seeds of 12 varieties were propagated, and currently, 27 varieties are registered and permitted for use in the Russian Federation. However, imported seeds continue to be in demand due to high quality and consistent yield. The chief editor of the portal Sugar.ru, Vadim Gomoz, stated that the recent increase in the quota for seed imports by 900 thousand tons indicates a shortage of domestic seed material.
Overall, the issue with seeds concerns not only breeding work but also financing, as cultivating sugar beet is a costly process. The main difficulty lies in financing: to run a successful business, it is necessary to have a low interest rate.
