The online publication Agriland reports that the chemical giant Bayer and leading producer of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel, Neste, have announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding to jointly scale up rapeseed as a feedstock for biofuels.
The partners plan to collaborate in developing a winter rapeseed ecosystem in the Southern Great Plains of the USA. Frank Terhorst, Head of Strategy and Sustainability at Bayer Crop Science, emphasized that renewable fuels are an important component in decarbonizing transport and energy, and global goals continue to drive the growth of the biofuel market, thereby increasing demand for biomass feedstock in the future.
Terhorst stressed that the company aims to support farmers in supplying low-carbon feedstock on demand by investing in new crops such as winter rapeseed and promoting sustainable farming systems.
According to Bayer's plan, the cultivation of hybrid winter rapeseed TruFlex will begin in 2027. Winter rapeseed, used as an alternative crop in crop rotation, contributes to carbon sequestration in the soil and can improve its health by increasing organic matter content and water retention capacity, consequently enhancing fertility.
