an organization of oil exporting countries founded in 1960 by a number of countries (Algeria, Ecuador, Indonesia, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, etc.) with the aim of coordinating sales volumes and setting prices for crude oil. Due to the fact that OPEC controls about half of the world's oil trade, it is able to significantly influence the level of world prices.
